Dust Mites

Dust mites are very small and hardy creatures that inhabit and thrive on warm and humid spaces. They’re just a quarter of a millimeter long, can be found in many places inside the home, such as bedding, carpets or clothing and live off of dead human skin cells.

Dust mites are also a common trigger for asthma, predominantly in children and the elderly, due to the allergenic nature of their droppings.

A family member with a predisposition to an allergic reaction could have any or one of these symptoms:

  • Watery eyes
  • Runny nose
  • Hay fever
  • Clogged lungs
  • Breathing problems

The best approach to addressing a potential dust mite infestation is to remove the conditions in your home that allow them to develop. Start in your damp basement or crawl space below your living area. Dust mites thrive in those dark, humid spaces, contaminating the atmosphere with allergens that get carried away upward into your living space and impact the quality of the air you and your family breathe.

Preventive measures such as removing carpets and installing a proper drainage system in your basement or crawl space are all important steps in fighting dust mites and mold growth, but running a dehumidifier is also essential, since it allows you to control relative humidity inside your home and prevent moisture from damaging your structures and inviting dust mites and mold to settle in.
